From dereliction to inspiration
All over the world there's sorry evidence of derelict mines. They've left pollution, health hazards and contaminated land in their wake. Take Romania, where hundreds of mines were simply abandoned after the 1989 revolution and the fall of Ceausescu. Water pollution, chemicals and dust in the atmosphere caused serious health dangers. Large areas of land were completely out of action.
But that's not the end of it. Today, an astonishing programme of remediation is restoring both land and social pride - transforming local environments and the lives of the people who live there. Engineering and environmental consultancy Wardell Armstrong are at the heart of it. This is their story.
